MoMA PS1 Presents Freya Powell's "Only the Remains Remain"

During her three-month residency, Freya Powell continues developing her performance project Only Remains Remain, which uses the structure of a Sophoclean chorus to create an elegy for the hundreds of unidentified migrants buried in mass graves in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Brooks County, Texas. Working with an ensemble of 15 performers , Powell explores the mournful potential of the voice. Through a collaborative process, the work utilizes pitch, intonation, breath, movement, and silence to embody a contemporary tragedy drawn from the story of Antigone. An in-process presentation marks the culmination of the residency.

Only Remains Remain is made possible, in part, by Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

The Frequency Series Presents Fonema Consort's "Vistas Furtivas" Album Release

Fonema Consort’s third album, Vistas furtivas, is a portrait album of their long-time collaborate, Ecuadorian composer Juan Campoverde. Campoverde’s music is full of deep, secretive, and lush magic. Spiritually, it is birdlike: lyrical, rapidly changing between textures, constantly on the wing. Released with New Focus Recordings, and supported generously by a City of Chicago DCASE grant.

The University of Chicago and Goethe Institut Present Fonema Consort and the Music of Peter Ablinger

  • The University of Chicago Logan Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Composer Peter Ablinger and Chicago-based new music group Fonema Consort will delve together into an array of meanings of the human voice that preoccupy both parties – a clash of artistic worlds having in common the challenge of performative and perceptual notions in music. With Fonema, the sexagenarian composer – one whose creative output intersects the modernist and conceptual, performative and technological – will expand one of his iconic artistic undertakings, “Voices and Piano” by premiering two new movements based on the voices of Diamanda Galas and George Bataille; and will create a new piece for the ensemble, drawing from previous reflections on the meaning of song.

The soundscape of cities are songs in his Cityopera; recordings of speeches by iconic 20th century personalities are songs in his "song cycle of sorts" “Voices and Piano”; and in his “Weiss/Weisslich 17” (2015) for soprano and noise, the singer takes on an instrumental role, only uttering sustained notes of various durations against morphing backgrounds of white noise. The “Weiss/Weisslich” series explores noise as a source of massive information upon which the listener can extract or carve their own "song."

The project is made possible with the generous support of the Goethe Institut, the Richard and Mary L. Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry, and the Amphion Foundation.

Nina Dante's "Éntheos" at Spectrum

Premieres of five movements of Dante’s large-scale solo work “Éntheos” alongside sets by Gabriel Zucker, Aaron Roche, and Very Still Life.

In ancient Greek, the word éntheos means to be possessed by or to become one with a god. In Dante’s large-scale, ecstatic solo work “Éntheos”, each movement channels a place in the natural world where she experienced a guttural pull to the sacred and ritualistic, and a sense of being ‘enthused ‘by the world.
